Description : This is a very nice Java based Chat server (and client program).

Installation : You must be able to run a Java program from your server for the Chat Server side to work. 

Stability : I have never encountered a crash.

Strengths:

• Professional
• Powerful
• Fast chat capability

Weaknesses:

• Must be able to run a Java program on your web server
• Slow to load the Client java program
• Not modifiable (at least in the free version)

Description : This was the Perl based trial version of WebPosts WebChatter. I believe it is no longer available. Try it on our site at: http://www.somewhereincanada.com/cgi/webchatter/chat.cgi  

Installation :  Was fairly straight forward if I remember correctly.

Stability : Stable if the net is stable and fast which is when?

• Many features similar to IRC!
• Easy to set up.
• Written in Perl
• Multiple rooms available

Weaknesses:

• Can be quite slow at times
• Rooms don't close when no one is in them
• Still shows user if they do not log off correctly

Description : This is another Perl based chat script.

Installation : Simple.

Stability : Very.

Strengths:

• As Ralf says, It's simple, fast and free 
• It felt smooth
• Simple yet effective user options

Weaknesses:

• Screen flashes when updated 
• Only one room allowed

Description : BlueChat is a fast, free, web based chat program with many features. Color codes, smileys, actions, multiple channels, chat logging, and curse word filtering. Currently at version 2.4, no future versions planned. Works with both UNIX and Windows servers. Requires a server with Perl 4 or 5 installed.

Installation : Simple.

Stability : Very.

Strengths:

• I liked the look and feel of it.

Weaknesses:

• No admin features
